What is a wheelchair platform lift?

A wheelchair platform lift, also called a vertical platform lift, moves a person in their wheelchair vertically between floor levels on an enclosed platform, without the transfer a stairlift needs or the space a ramp requires. It is different from a goods or industrial platform lift, which is built to move freight rather than a seated passenger.

Why people need it

A ramp or a stairlift doesn't work for every home or building

Not every wheelchair user can transfer onto a stairlift seat, and not every building has room for the gradient a ramp needs.

Full-time wheelchair use

Someone who cannot transfer out of their wheelchair needs a lift that moves them while seated, not a stairlift.

Powered wheelchairs

Powered chairs are often too heavy or too large for a stairlift platform, but not for a properly specified platform lift.

No space for a ramp

A compliant ramp gradient can need more length than a site has. A platform lift solves the same access problem in a fraction of the footprint.

Compliance obligations

Commercial, hospitality and government buildings carry a regulatory obligation to provide wheelchair access, not just a preference for it.

Types

Three types of wheelchair platform lift

Which type fits depends on the building, how permanent the need is, and whether an existing staircase is in the way.

Fixed platform lifts

Permanently installed, higher travel distance and load capacity. Most of our range, including EASYLIFT, HDN, SIGMA and LIFTBOY 1/2/3, is fixed. Suits homes and commercial buildings with a long-term access need.

Portable platform lifts

Relocatable, lower travel distance. LIFTBOY 4 is our mobile option, moved between sites rather than permanently fixed. Suits temporary needs, rented properties and construction-site use.

Stair-and-platform combination

For staircases where a standard lift shaft won't fit. FLEX STEP combines a staircase lift with a wheelchair platform in one installation, our most common recommendation for older Abu Dhabi and Dubai buildings. See our stair lift range

How it works

Hydraulic vs electric drive

Every platform lift raises and lowers along a fixed track. The drive mechanism behind that movement is what actually differs between models.

Hydraulic drive

A hydraulic pump and cylinder raise the platform. The standard choice for outdoor lifts and higher-travel installations, since it handles heavier loads smoothly and holds position reliably under load. ELEVEX and ALPIN, our outdoor-rated models, use this drive.

Electric / screw-spindle drive

An electric motor turns a spindle or screw mechanism. More compact and lower-maintenance, the typical choice for indoor, residential installations where space and noise matter more than maximum load. Several of our indoor LIFTBOY and EASYLIFT configurations use this drive.

Platform gates must close before the lift moves
Obstruction sensors stop the platform automatically
Emergency stop on every model
Battery backup completes the current trip in a power cut

Key features to check before you choose

✓Load capacity: confirmed against the wheelchair type, including powered chairs, which weigh more than manual ones.
✓Travel height: how many floors or what vertical distance the lift needs to cover.
✓Platform size & gate configuration: enough room to turn a wheelchair, entry/exit on the same or opposite sides.
✓Drive type: hydraulic for higher load and outdoor use, electric/screw-spindle for compact indoor installs.

Load capacity, especially for powered wheelchairs
Drive type (hydraulic typically costs more than electric for equivalent indoor use)
Site preparation, including any shaft, pit or structural work needed

"The question I get most often is whether a client needs a platform lift or a stair lift, and it comes down to one thing: can the person get out of the wheelchair to transfer onto a stairlift seat. If they can't, or they use a powered wheelchair too heavy or too large for a stairlift platform, a wheelchair platform lift is the only option that works. A stairlift also needs the staircase to stay usable for everyone else in the household, which a platform lift doesn't require, since it can be sited separately. In practice, I see platform lifts specified where someone needs full-time independent access, and stairlifts specified where someone has reduced mobility but can still stand and transfer briefly."

What's the difference between a wheelchair platform lift and a stair lift?+

A stair lift moves a seated user along the stairs and needs the user to transfer out of their wheelchair onto the stairlift seat. A wheelchair platform lift moves the person while they stay in their wheelchair, which is why it's the option for full-time wheelchair users or anyone using a powered wheelchair.

Do I need approval to install a wheelchair platform lift in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?+

It depends on the building type. We confirm what applies to your specific building as part of the free assessment and include it in your written quote.

Hydraulic or electric, which drive type is better?+

Neither is universally better. Hydraulic suits outdoor and higher-load installations. Electric/screw-spindle suits compact indoor installations where lower maintenance matters more than maximum load capacity.
