Steel Is Strong. You Still Have to Lift It Every Time.
Portable means someone folds it, carries it, and sets it up on their own, often more than once a day. That single fact decides which material actually works.
Aluminum
- WeightOne person can lift, fold, and deploy it without strain.
- CorrosionNaturally resists rust in UAE heat, humidity, and coastal air.
- MaintenanceNo repainting or rust treatment required over its life.
- Lifespan20+ years with basic care and normal outdoor exposure.
- Best forDaily portable use, indoors or outside.
Steel
- WeightTwo to three times heavier than aluminum at the same weight capacity.
- CorrosionNeeds regular painting and rust prevention to hold up outdoors.
- MaintenanceOngoing upkeep, or corrosion sets in within a few years.
- LifespanLong if maintained, short if left untreated in the elements.
- Best forFixed, permanent installations, not something you fold up and move.
For a ramp you need to fold, carry, and store, aluminum is the material that actually holds up to daily use. Every Flex Access portable ramp is built in aluminum for this reason.
The Wrong Ramp Length Turns a Small Step Into a Real Hazard
A ramp that is too short creates a slope steep enough to tip a wheelchair or scooter backward. Length is not a preference, it is a safety calculation.
The Abu Dhabi International Building Code sets a maximum ramp slope of 1 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (Section 1010.2). In practice, that means your ramp length needs to be at least 12 times the height of the rise it is covering.
Example: a 100 mm step needs a ramp at least 1200 mm (4 ft) long. A 150 mm step needs at least 1800 mm (6 ft).
Matching a Length to Your Step
Measure the rise in millimeters, multiply by 12, and check that figure against the sizing table above to find the shortest ramp that still meets the slope. Where a single step is small, a 2 ft or 3 ft ramp is usually enough. Full staircases or high thresholds need a longer or modular ramp, and that is worth confirming on site rather than guessing from a tape measure alone.
Sizing for Mobility Scooters and Power Chairs
Scooters and power chairs add more combined weight than a manual wheelchair, so length and weight capacity both matter. The 6 ft, 8 ft, 10 ft, and 12 ft ramps in the sizing table above carry the full 300 kg rating, which covers most scooters and power chairs together with their rider.
Wheelchair Access Is Only One Job a Portable Ramp Does
Hotels, retail teams, and facility managers keep portable ramps on hand for more than one purpose. If you are equipping a property rather than a single home, here is where they earn their place.
Hospitality
Temporary access at event entrances, ballrooms, and outdoor functions where a permanent ramp is not practical or not yet built.
Facilities & Events
Loading equipment, trolleys, and stage gear alongside wheelchair access, without keeping two separate pieces of equipment on site.
Retail & Public Access
A quick, code-compliant fix for a raised threshold or step while a permanent renovation is scheduled or approved.
A Ramp That Isn't Sized to Code Is a Hazard, Not a Solution
Every Flex Access portable ramp is selected and sized against these standards, not just described as "compliant" in general terms.
Maximum Slope
Abu Dhabi International Building Code, Section 1010.2: ramps used as part of a pedestrian route shall not exceed 1 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (8 percent slope).
Surface Traction
Section 1010.7.1: ramp surfaces shall be slip-resistant and securely attached, which is why every Flex Access ramp uses a high-traction, anti-slip deck.
Handrails on Higher Rises
Section 1010.8: ramps with a rise greater than 6 inches (152 mm) require handrails on both sides, a factor to plan for on longer or modular ramp runs.
Weight Capacity
Every ramp is rated for a specific maximum load. Exceeding it, even briefly, compromises the surface and the user's safety.
Broader accessibility obligations for public and private spaces in the UAE are set out in Federal Law No. 29 of 2006, which these ramp specifications are built to support.

Frequently Questions, Answered
Straight answers on material, weight capacity, cost, and safety for portable aluminum wheelchair ramps in the UAE.
For portable use, yes. Aluminum is significantly lighter, so one person can lift, fold, and set it up without help. It resists rust in the UAE's heat and humidity and needs no repainting or rust treatment over time. Steel can hold more raw weight, but that strength comes with two to three times the weight for the same capacity, which works against the point of a ramp you need to move and store. All Flex Access portable ramps are aluminum for this reason.
Single-fold ramps for quick threshold and curb use, multi-fold or suitcase-style ramps that pack down small for transport, telescoping ramps that adjust in length, and modular multi-section ramps for longer runs or full staircases. All of these are available in lightweight aluminum, which is the standard material for portable ramps of every type.
Our portable ramp range holds between 272 kg and 300 kg depending on length. The 6 ft, 8 ft, 10 ft, and 12 ft ramps carry the full 300 kg rating, which is the range most mobility scooters and power chairs need once you add the combined weight of the device and rider.
Price depends on length, weight capacity, and finish, so we do not quote a fixed number here. We recommend a quick, no-obligation assessment so we can confirm the right size for your steps or entrance and give you an accurate quote in writing.
Yes, when sized and used correctly. The Abu Dhabi International Building Code sets a maximum ramp slope of 1 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal, so the ramp length needs to match the rise it is covering. Beyond slope, look for a high-traction anti-slip surface, and never load the ramp beyond its rated weight capacity. For outdoor steps, a weather-resistant aluminum build and a longer multi-fold or modular ramp handle more than one riser better than a single-fold ramp.
Medicare does not apply in the UAE, as it is a US program. UAE residents registered as People of Determination may be eligible for support through the Sanad card in Dubai or the federal Atheer card under Federal Law No. 29 of 2006, both of which include health and housing related benefits. Coverage for specific equipment varies, so we recommend confirming directly with the Community Development Authority (Dubai) or the Ministry of Community Development for your case.
