FISCAL ENVELOPE
Full accessibility and fall risk elimination for independent living
The Challenge
Standard residential bathrooms pose significant safety hazards for elderly individuals with limited mobility. The existing layout featured a traditional bathtub and slick surfaces, which created high-friction pivot points and elevated the risk of slips, trips, and falls. The client required a complete infrastructural overhaul that combined physical stability aids with modern assistive technology without compromising the villa’s premium aesthetic.
The Solution
Flex Access executed a top-to-bottom structural and technical modification of the bathroom infrastructure:
1. Shower Area & Structural Overhaul
- Hazard Elimination: Completely removed the high-risk bathtub and traditional shower configuration.
- Zero-Entry Shower Box: Installed a seamless, low-threshold shower box to eliminate tripping hazards during entry and exit.
- Anti-Slip Flooring: Replaced existing flooring with high-grade, certified slip-resistant tiles to ensure maximum traction when wet.
- Ergonomic Seating: Integrated a dedicated, secure shower bench to allow the user to sit safely while bathing.
2. Comprehensive Fall-Prevention Architecture
- Strategic Support: Installed heavy-duty grab bars directly within the shower zone for stable weight-bearing support.
- Stability Anchors: Positioned a specialized grab rail adjacent to the glass partition, providing a continuous support pathway.
- WC Accessibility: Integrated targeted grab rails surrounding the WC (toilet) area to assist with safe transfers and standing stability.
3. Adaptive Ergonomics & Vanity Redesign
- Sink Accessibility: Re-engineered the sink and vanity layout to remove lower obstructions, eliminating the need for the user to awkwardly raise or strain their legs.
- Accessible Controls: Positioned a low-slung, easily reachable control interface underneath the sink for effortless management of water fixtures.
4. Smart Home Assistive Technology
- Automated Lighting: Integrated an intelligent, motion-activated smart lighting system. The lights automatically illuminate the moment the user enters the toilet space, eliminating the danger of navigating in the dark or reaching for out-of-reach switches.
5. Emergency Alarm Cord
- Installed a pull cord alarm system near the toilet and shower area. If triggered, the alarm sounds outside the bathroom and sends a notification to connected phones, so help can reach the resident even if family members are not home.
The Results
- Enhanced Safety: Successfully mitigated primary fall triggers by replacing the bathtub with a slip-resistant shower box and continuous grab rails.
- Restored Independence: Empowered the elderly resident to utilize the bathroom facilities safely with minimal to no external assistance.
- Seamless Automation: The addition of smart lighting created a hands-free, well-lit environment that actively prevents nighttime disorientation.
