What Is Flex Step?

Flex Step is a 2-in-1 accessibility solution that functions as a normal staircase and converts into a wheelchair lifting platform on demand. It covers height differences from 240mm up to 1,295mm, across configurations from 2 to 6 steps, and automatically returns to its stair position around one minute after use.

Manufactured by LiftUp A/S (Denmark) and supplied and installed in the UAE by Flex Access, Flex Step solves accessibility in spaces too tight to fit a separate staircase and a ramp or lift side by side, since it's both at once, in the same footprint.

Key Advantages

01

Two functions, one footprint

Stairs for everyone else, a lift when needed, without installing a separate ramp or platform alongside the staircase.

02

Returns to stairs on its own

Automatically reverts to a normal staircase around one minute after the lift is used, no manual reset needed.

03

Plug-and-play installation

Factory-tested components arrive ready to install, with no major structural alteration to the space.

04

400kg capacity

Rated the same as Flex Access's standalone platform lifts, despite the more complex mechanism.

05

Matches existing decor

Finish, material, and color choices let it blend with the surrounding staircase rather than standing apart from it.

06

Indoor or outdoor

Suitable for both interior stairwells and exterior entrance steps.

Stairs Until Someone Needs a Lift

Most of the time, Flex Step is simply a staircase. Press the control, and the steps reconfigure into a flat, level platform that carries a wheelchair user or someone with a walking impairment to the next level. Around a minute after use, it folds back into stairs on its own.

That means one structure serves everyone using the building, instead of a staircase for most people and a separate ramp or lift installed beside it for the rest.

Flex Step Technical Specifications

Configuration (step count and width) is chosen to match the exact staircase being replaced or built. Confirm figures against the manufacturer's current data sheet before specifying.

Built for the One Risk a Moving Staircase Has to Solve

A staircase that reconfigures into a platform has to guard against pinch and crush points between the moving steps, and Flex Step is engineered specifically around that risk, not around generic lift safety.

  • Pressure-sensitive crush guards beneath the platform
  • Infrared sensors between the steps to prevent pinch injuries during transition
  • Automatic shutdown if the platform detects overload or uneven weight distribution
  • Fold-down access ramp with automatic locking for wheelchair boarding
  • Audible alerts on every movement, plus an emergency stop button
  • Battery backup keeps the unit operational through a power outage

Key Applications

Homes and villas with tight stairwells

Where there's no room to fit a separate ramp or platform lift alongside an existing staircase.

Care homes and community centers

One access point serves both walking and wheelchair-using residents or visitors, without a second structure.

Heritage and design-sensitive buildings

Looks like an ordinary staircase for most of the day, avoiding a visible accessibility fixture in the space.

Retrofit projects with no room to expand

Solves access in the existing stair footprint rather than requiring demolition to add a ramp.

Flex Step Frequently Asked Questions

How is Flex Step different from a normal platform lift?

A standard platform lift is a lift only. Flex Step is a working staircase most of the time and converts into a lift platform on demand, then returns to stairs automatically after about a minute.

How many steps can Flex Step replace?

Configurations range from 2 to 6 steps, covering lifting heights from 240mm up to 1,295mm.

What stops someone getting caught between the moving steps?

Infrared sensors between the steps and pressure-sensitive crush guards beneath the platform are built specifically to prevent pinch injuries during the transition between stairs and platform.

Does it need major construction work to install?

No. Flex Step is designed for plug-and-play installation with minimal structural alteration to the existing stairwell.

Is Flex Step available in Abu Dhabi and Dubai?

Yes. Flex Access supplies and installs Flex Step across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the wider UAE.
