Beach Accessibility Mats in Dubai and the UAE
Portable walkways and wheelchair mats for sand, from the promenade to the water's edge
Sand stops a wheelchair within a few metres. Flex Access beach accessible mats lay a firm, non-slip path across it, so wheelchair users, seniors, parents with strollers and anyone with limited mobility can reach the shoreline without being carried or left behind.
If you run a public beach, resort, hotel or waterfront venue, beach accessibility is now part of what guests expect. Dubai Municipality reports that 90% of the city's beaches are already fully accessible to People of Determination (Gulf News). Our mats help you close the gap on your own stretch of sand, with widths that meet international beach access route standards.

What is a beach mobility mat?
A beach mobility mat is a roll-out pathway, usually woven polyester, that turns loose sand into a firm, stable surface for wheels and feet. It lets wheelchairs, walkers, strollers and beach carts cross the sand without sinking, and it can be laid temporarily or left in place for the season.
The reason it matters: under the US Architectural Barriers Act standards, sand on its own is not treated as a firm and stable surface, so a beach access route needs something laid over it (US Access Board, ABA Section 1018). A beach mobility mat is the simplest way to provide that surface without building a permanent boardwalk.
A path across the sand that doesn't sink or shift underfoot.
Each Flex Access beach access mat is a modular roll of UV-resistant, high-strength polyester that sits flat on the sand and spreads the load of wheels and footsteps. The result is a smooth, non-slip route that takes a wheelchair user, a grandparent with a walker or a family with a stroller from the promenade or boardwalk straight to the water's edge.
The mats are light enough to roll out by hand, yet strong enough for electric wheelchairs and steady foot traffic. Use them as temporary portable walkways for a weekend event, or anchor them semi-permanently for a resort season. The flexible weave follows uneven ground while keeping the walking surface flat and comfortable for barefoot guests.

Engineered for sand, sun and salt.
Grip where sand gives way
Wide, textured surface ribs give secure traction to wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking frames and bare feet, so these wheelchair mats for sand stay safe even when wet from the shoreline.
Built for electric wheelchairs
Reinforced thickness and a high-density weave carry heavy powered chairs and constant foot traffic, with tensile strength of 2000 N or more along the length of the mat.
Made for Gulf heat and salt
Machine-brushed bonding spreads adhesive evenly through the weave, keeping the mat stable in hot, humid coastal conditions.
Comfortable barefoot
A flat, smooth surface with sealed edges leaves no sharp points or pressure spots, which matters on a resort beach full of swimmers and children.
Down in minutes, extended in minutes
The roll-out system uses aluminium connectors, grommets and anchoring stakes, so you can install, lift or lengthen a route without machinery.
Low maintenance, no sand build-up
The polyester resists UV, salt and alkali, and the open weave stops sand collecting on the walking surface between uses.
Width decides who can pass, not just who can cross.
The ABA beach access route standard sets a minimum clear width of 60 inches (1525 mm), so two people using mobility devices can pass each other without rolling off into the sand (ABA Section 1018.4). Pick your beach access mat width against how the route will actually be used.
| Width | Best for | Two-way wheelchair traffic |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 m (3.3 ft) | Private villas, single-file routes, short temporary paths | No |
| 1.52 m (5 ft) | Public beaches, hotels and resorts that need a standards-based route | Yes |
| 1.83 m (6 ft) | Busy public beaches, events, routes shared with beach carts or lifeguard equipment | Yes, with extra margin |

Built against named standards.
Flex Access Beach Accessibility Mats are built against these standards:
- ABA (Architectural Barriers Act) Accessibility Standards, Section 1018 Beach Access Routes: firm and stable surface (1018.3) and 60 in (1525 mm) minimum clear width (1018.4) when using the 1.52 m or 1.83 m widths.
- ADA 2010 Standards for Accessible Design, Section 302.1: walking surfaces that are firm, stable and slip resistant.
- AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act), Design of Public Spaces Standards, O. Reg. 191/11 Part IV.1: beach access route provisions for public spaces.
This makes the mats a fit for government and municipality projects as well as international hospitality brands that apply one accessibility standard across all their properties.

Beach access mat questions, answered.
What is a beach mobility mat?
A beach mobility mat is a roll-out pathway, usually woven polyester, laid over sand to create a firm, stable, non-slip surface. It lets wheelchairs, walkers, strollers and beach carts reach the water without sinking, and can be installed temporarily or for a full season.
Is there a beach mat that allows sand through?
Yes. Flex Access mats use an open polyester weave, so dry sand falls through the gaps instead of building up on the walking surface. Wet sand from the shoreline drains through more slowly, and a quick sweep clears any that remains.
Can electric wheelchairs use wheelchair mats for sand?
Yes. The reinforced, high-density weave has a longitudinal tensile strength of 2000 N or more and is designed for powered wheelchairs, mobility scooters and heavy foot traffic, as long as the mat is anchored and the sand beneath is levelled.
What width of beach access mat do I need?
For a public route where two wheelchair users may pass each other, choose 1.52 m or 1.83 m, which meet the 60 in (1525 mm) clear width in ABA Section 1018.4. The 1.0 m width suits private villas and single-file paths.
Are these portable walkways permanent or removable?
Both. They roll out and lift by hand, so you can use them as portable walkways for a one-day event, or anchor them with galvanised stakes and leave them in place semi-permanently at a resort or public beach.
How long do beach accessible mats last in UAE heat and salt?
The polyester is UV, salt and alkali resistant, and edges are sealed against fraying. Each mat carries a 5-year manufacturer warranty against material and production defects under normal use.
